Odoo's accounting is genuinely complete, but it ships global-generic. The US-specific setup that makes your accountant comfortable: COA design, sales tax, 1099 tracking, and bank feeds.

Odoo ships a generic US chart of accounts. Treat it as scaffolding, not gospel. The design question is reporting: what P&L lines do you want to manage the business by? Build the account structure to produce that statement directly, use analytic accounts (Odoo's dimension system) for the slices you'll want later (by channel, by location, by product line) and keep the account count lean. Every account is a decision someone makes on every posting; a 400-account chart migrated from old habits is 300 daily opportunities to misfile.
US sales tax is thousands of jurisdictions with opinions. Odoo handles the mechanics (tax groups, fiscal positions that apply the right treatment by customer and state) and integrates with AvaTax for the rate math. If you sell into multiple states, the integration pays for itself in the first audit you don't fail. Configure nexus states explicitly, and revisit them yearly; economic nexus thresholds have a way of arriving before anyone notices.
Flag 1099 vendors at setup, not in January. It's one field on the vendor record plus a discipline of collecting W-9s at onboarding: trivial during implementation, miserable as a year-end archaeology project.
Odoo connects to US banks for automatic statement import, and reconciliation becomes a daily ten-minute match instead of a month-end weekend. This is the feature that makes owners actually trust the cash number on the dashboard, because it's yesterday's reality, not last month's.
The most common friction isn't technical: it's an external accountant meeting an unfamiliar system in week one of a close. Give them a login during implementation, walk them through the statement mapping, and agree on the close checklist before go-live. Fewer US accountants know Odoo than QuickBooks. A two-hour orientation converts most skeptics, and the ones it doesn't convert usually have a point worth hearing about your configuration.
Migrating books from QuickBooks? The mechanics are in the migration checklist, and the decision itself in Odoo vs QuickBooks.
